Is Money Tight? Have You Tried Spiritual Finance? WTF!

With job layoffs at record highs and the fact that we are still in the middle of the worst economic period for the US since the great depression, the term spiritual mathematics has caught my attention and has me concerned.

This is Revivl’s first off topic post and is not something we will do very often but this really blew my mind and I wanted to share. In the clip below Jerry Fallwell introduces spiritual mathematics.

Ok hopefully you just watched that clip and was disgusted as I was. Yes I know Falwell was always making some outrageous statements but living in our current recession, it really makes me wonder how many other churches around the country (or world) may be using a similar tactic to keep its revenue stream at the same levels before the economic crisis began.

I think George Carlin said it best; Google it...
To paraphrase his point, why would an all-creating, omnipotent deity be in constant need of money?
  • I called my church last week to get $ help for one of my students' family. Their gas had been turned off. They said levels of people asking for help has skyrocketed and they are no longer paying rents or utility bills because it postpones the inevitable in many cases.

Falwell represents an old school faith. Of course what we give out comes back. Many atheists give and find that to be true. My church is working to help our community so to answer your question about how you wonder if churches are using tactics, not all of them but some are. Same as always. I never write religious stuff on my blogs bu felt the need to tell you that Falwell doesn't represent a monolithic movement and I hate being piegeonholed with people like him. I do like your site so I hope I haven't offended in any way.

I have to say I don't know how it works entirely but it works. between the great advice in the bible, good advice from wise & good friends at the church, and God's blessing in my life I have attained a level of prosperity, tripling my income in 3 years.

Could I have done it without tithing\being generous\etc. . Yes, I believe it possible for a man to do that, but I will tell you it would have not been possible for this man to accomplish it without God, and through it all that tithe represented a part of my thankfulness to God. For healing my marriage, for removing alcohol from my life, for new friends, a new lifestyle, a change of perspective, and a change of life. It's a very small gift I give , in the hopes that others find what I found, and in the long run that is the purpose of the tithe so that his glory be magnified, both in your life by giving, and in other lives by receiving the blessing.
  • 10,10,80 is a stupid. That 10% is a large chunk of your earnings and he's only advising it because he wants more coffers to his organization so they skim off the top and collect the money for their own profit.

Spending 80% of your earnings and only saving 10% is a fools move.

this is at least a few years old. Saw it in Jesus camp or one of those type of doc's.

I've never been a Falwell fan but I am a Christian and I know what he says sounds foolish but spiritual matters sound foolish to those not in tune to spiritual matters. I'm not a church pastor, I just believe that God's economy is not the world's economy and God's economy is not in recession. If one makes God their source, if one gives cheerfully, God honors that and blesses it. I know it first hand. It's alright if you think that's crazy, but the Bible is clear about giving and it's the one area where God says it's okay to test Him. If you truly think it's crazy, then try an experiment in giving--there are two possibles outcomes: either you're right, or he is.

I saw something similar from good ol' Mike Murdock on TV. He was telling everyone that they needed to provide $1000 "seed" to sow for the Lord, and they would be taken care of. He was even sure to suggest that people could use their credit cards if they didn't have the money. That's REAL good advice!

Here is some of his math, from quite some time ago.

  • Not really, this has been taught for a long time and is based off of scriptures. It works out to 100% - God's blessings < 90% + God's blessings. Farwell isn't the first one to come up with this. This has been the standard practice of the Mormon church since it's conception; the Mormons don't run off of conventional offering plates being passed around every week but off of tithing from each member.

I don't agree with much of what Jerry says, but if you follow a 10, 10, 80 principle you will never want for money. The first 10% is giving money. Giving money to a charity, a church, whatever, allows you to take control of your money. Its scientific fact that giving money to someone in need benefits you both, even watching someone in need causes the same brain reaction. (Watch Home Makeover if you don't belive me). The second set of 10% is saving. (Not investing, SAVING). The last 80 is for spending. If you only spend 80% of what you make then you are always living within your means.

Too often, people increase spending when their income increases, this lets money have control over you. By taking control of your money, and choosing how you want to spend it, you won't ever have financial problems again.
