To me this looks like a jab at MySpace who is losing it’s footing as the top place to promote your music. I have to say money is a good incentive but does ReverbNation really have what it takes?

ReverbNation recently announced a “Fair Share” program that will pay participating musicians $.50 per free download with each track with a small section of branded messaging within the digital cover art displayed every time the song is played.

Hypebot.com confirmed with ReverbNation how this would work:
“The downloads will be in the MP3 and M4A formats, will be offered to fans on a set of branded landing pages. When a fan initiates a download, patent pending technology merges the brand’s message into the digital cover art and songs are tracked as they are passed from fan to fan. Much of the value to the advertiser is that their message continues to spread along with the track as it is shared virally from directly fan to fan and via P2P.”
“While many artists will get a very nice paycheck each month, many artists will get very little.” – ReverbNation
Reverbnation statement:
“ReverbNation is a business with offices, employees, and investors, so we need to make money to eat, sleep, and be happy too. But we differ from most companies in this space in that we understand that without the Artist we have no music, and without the music we have no website, and without a website, we can’t eat, sleep or be happy. We bring our heart and soul and technology to the table, but Artists bring themselves, their music, and their fans. This is why we decided to split all advertising revenue down the middle. This all sounds lovely, but please don’t quit your day job over this. While many artists will get a very nice paycheck each month, many artists will get very little. Remember, it is all based on the activity an Artist generates, and that is the fairest way to do it. Other companies like Last.fm are now copying our model and sharing some ad revenue with the indie Artist. But we just don’t feel that 10% is enough for all that you do for our site. You are our partners, and we will always treat you that way.”
The program will officialy kick off it’s ad supported downloads in mid June, with campaigns lasting 90 days. Only time will tell if this approach can be successful or not, but as a musician myself, I can tell you that I love this idea and the thought of the artist actually making a 50% portion makes me giddy!
