Does Prince’s Religion Forbid Necessary Hip Replacement?

Unfortunately, thanks to his practice as a Jehovah’s Witness, Prince still refuses surgery. JW’s don’t believe in blood transfusions.

There is a story that’s circulating on the internet today that Prince needs double hip replacement surgery. The issue is that he’s a Jehovah’s Witness and refuses to get the surgery due to his religious beliefs. From Showbiz411.com :

“Prince was on the prowl again last night, making an unscheduled appearance at the Apollo Theater’s 75th anniversary celebration to toast Patti LaBelle.

But the real buzz on Prince is that his much reported hip problems of the past have now turned into need for a double hip replacement. Unfortunately, thanks to his practice as a Jehovah’s Witness, Prince still refuses surgery. JW’s don’t believe in blood transfusions.

“He’s in a lot of pain,” said a source who was backstage with him last night at the Apollo. “He’s popping pain killers and hoping it will all go away.”

But it won’t. Back in 2005 reports surfaced that Prince needed one hip replaced. He declined. Then again in 2007 and 2008 came more reports that he’d finally agreed to “secret surgery.”

Here is what the JW’s wiki says about blood transfusions:

“Jehovah’s Witnesses are opposed to blood transfusions, based on their understanding of how the Bible says blood should be treated. In 1961, accepting a blood transfusion became grounds for expulsion from the religion. They do not accept the threat of death as sufficient to dissuade them from rejecting blood transfusions for themselves or their children. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the Bible prohibits blood transfusions based on their interpretation of  Acts 15:28-29″

prince Prince is an Icon to say the least.  He has stood the test of time and is still on top of his game after 30 years in the very unforgiving world of the “music biz”. Unlike fellow artist Michael Jackson who seems like a shell of what once was, Prince’s reputation seems to have stayed intact. But what they both have in common is growing up in the world as a Jehovah’s Witness.
You would think that would tarnish any celebrity’s career due to the negative image the media has given JW’s as ” those annoying people that knock on your doors”, but has never played a role in the public’s opinion of these two music giants.

Now I am friends with a lot of Ex-witnesses, and (due to an ex-girlfriend) have even been to a Sunday meet up. They are all nice people and all but…. “BRAINWASHED” is what flashes in my mind when they try and preach the “good word”. I’m not singling out JW’s here because in truth that’s how I feel about any religion. To be honest, it’s just that JW’s take it to a Mormon level if you get my drift.

Everybody believes in something whether you’re an atheist or a Muslim but I think you have to put your health before any sort of religious teachings. Prince has yet to release a statement on the subject but I’m sure this will cause quite a few debates about the practices of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and hopefully all the other absolutely INSANE ….religious teachings out there.

Don't know why he would refuse a hip surgery, you can get one without blood by many doctors around the us.
Bloodless surgery is widespread around the country and VERY effective and safe.
    google cell saver or
cell salvage machine is should be a no brainer for anyone. Much safer than a transfusion.
  • Riiyone
people really need to stop saying him being a jehovahs witness is a bad thing its a personal choice and you have no right to control it
  • brstilson
"But what they both have in common is growing up in the world as a Jehovah’s Witness."

Actually Prince did not "grow up" as a Jehovah's Witness. He was introduced to the religion by a friend of his--Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone fame--as an adult.
  • AF
Ps- Hey EY... Prince doesnt believe he's going to heaven. Nice try though.
And thanks to the current JW with the brain surgeries for putting things into perspective. People let door knocking that the JWS do close their mind to everything else and suddenly its a huge conspiracy theory. This article was terrible but Im not surprised a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon.
  • AF
just want to clarify that its blood jws are opposed to - not surgeries in general. Now days so many can be performed without blood or with blood replacements so it makes no sense that he wouldnt get the surgery - he could do that and probably still stick with the jw rules.
  • Sammy
This article is tabloid bullshit, unattributed to any reliable sources.
  • Carson
I think it's good that so many people call the author out on his completely biased writing, not to mention his lack of actual research on the subject of blood-transfusions.

I work in an ER in a major hospital in BC Canada, and I can say that a blood transfusion is at best a last resort for most physicians (for example if the cell saver isn't available). Also for the last 10 years medical journals have been warning about the contraindications of blood transfusions in most cases.

While this may generate "healthy discussion" it's a shame that while people call religion a "blind faith" they're more than willing to believe an unproven statement from the internet...
  • Shucks
So back when ACT was written were they doing blood transfusions then? Hmmm.!!!!
Now what about stock piling your own blood?
  • Very good article
Prince is a 80's stand out and I love 80's music
    See my 80's blog

  • silencer
You know, this entire article is complete bullshit....
Thanks for posting your own shit on Digg.
    Asshole.
  • JP
Check your facts guys. This is only a rumor. Prince does not need either hip replaced.
  • KM
    how do you know?

besides this has created a healthy discussion.

    > Everybody believes in something whether you’re an atheist or a Muslim
    >
Technically, atheists "operate under certain understandings based on the best, justified analysis according to current best-fitting theories aligned to the generally accepted evidence." This is strictly speaking "belief". But by putting them in the same bucket is religious beliefs, perhaps you are doing them a disservice by so casually combining "justified, evidence-based beliefs" with "faith (unsupported, belief-for-the-sake of it) belief".
  • Nick
"Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld." (Hebrews 11:1)

A little different than belief for the sake of it.
  • brstilson
I other words, belief that is not based on evidence.
  • Eddie
Umm I'm not sure where you got that definition of atheism, but the more widely accepted definition is simply the absence of a belief in God(s)

This is not 'belief' it is 'non-belief.'
  • Joseph Kelly
I'm sure that if this story was true, Prince's doctors (he can afford the best, I'm sure) would have told him about the alternatives to blood transfusion. The rumours don't make sense, so they probably aren't true. Prince will release a statement soon, I'm sure... "The stories r not true." Past rumours about Prince: The Black Album was recorded while he was possessed by a demon. The Lovesexy album was recorded after Prince met Satan and learned that he had been possessed all along. And so on. Lies or marketing?
  • GK
Yeah I'm pretty sure this is just a rumor.
  • JW
Wow, talk about misconceptions and outright misinformation! A current JW here and survivor of 4 brain surgeries.
  • NotActuallyInsane
    Yur ignorant.
  • sMARTER THAN U
This is the dumbest thing I have ever read. You don't need a blood transfusion during hip replacement surgery. Did you think they slice open a vein and let a pint of blood run out over the operating table? Or that it somehow evaporates during surgery? Come on people. Use your brains here.

I am not pro JW ( I kick them off my property just as fast as anyone), but this is too far of a stretch.
  • GK
    You should be proud
  • Chris
There are plenty of non-transfusion alternatives with this type of surgery. It's foolish to assume anything with his decision process.

WRT to the commenter complaining that JW's changing their stance, medical science has and continues to grow. Many who have studied the bible understand the issue of blood, its use specifically in imbibing in the days of the Israelites and on into Christian times. The principle has always been clear regarding whole blood.

Fractionations have come onto the scene only recently so of course there's time needed to assess and base decisions on sound scriptural thinking. Christian overseers in the 1st century went through the same thing. Perhaps the commenter would have preferred they had not change their stance on circumcision?
  • Me
obviously wikipedia is the best source for information regarding the basis for Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs. oh wait .. no that's ridiculous.
  • GK
According to Wikipedia Janice Joplin power-walked everywhere and was afraid of toilets..
  • Why doesn't Prince over the course of a year, collect enough of his own blood, cryogenically freeze it and then he wouldn't technically be getting a transfusion. It would be a self-fusion or his own blood. Eat that Prince, FIX THOSE HIPS. Ladies need to get moist.
  • EY
or cryogenically freeze himself until the day before the JW "judgement day" so he wouldnt need a hip replacement/blood transfusion at all. since he was a good JW and avoided a blood transfusion he'll go to heaven and wont need the replacement anymore
  • DB
I work in a surgery center and we get JW all the time. Hip replacement doesn't always require blood transfusion. If need be, he can donate his own blood. Maybe he is just scared.
  • Jimmy Jim
I have to take exception to this quote from this article:

"...the negative image the media has given JW’s as 'those annoying people that knock on your doors'"

It's not the media that gives me this impression. It's the damn Jehovah’s Witnesses knocking at my door who do! You don't see any other religion doing this, because it is EXTREMELY OBNOXIOUS. Do they really think people want to be bothered at home and given religious propaganda? This is why people have such a negative image of Jehovah’s Witnesses. It's from personal experience.
  • GK
most religions dont care enough about what they beleive to try and teach other people
  • J. R.
Finaly someone with insight! Jesus loved all enough to do that same work (Matthew 24:14 and Matthew 28:19,20). The question for those who think that JW are obnoxious for calling on their door to show them how much they care and wory for their wellbeing is, what have you done for your neighbor lately? They are people like you and me who work, get sick, die, and suffer and enjoy life as we do. Yet they stand out from the rest because they prove how much they love fellow man by what they do, by how they show their love for others. Oh and their going from house to house proves they love their neighbor because, they could use their free time to be lazy and sit at home watching TV but they don't, they are out there, just them, helping fellow man to learn about God and how they can have everlasting life, as the Bible explains it not clergyman or others who don't know a thing about the Bible!
  • kel
I was once a JW, I still have my heart for him but the thing is i dont like is the iron grip of the organization that uses his name. About the "door to door" i used to love this when i whole heartedly give myself to it but after awhile you need a break. being a JW you are REQUIRED to go house to house because you rREPORT this to the watchtower. They will say you are not required but if you dont report you will get monthly call or "talks" with the elders saying your spirituality is going down. thats what annoyed me the most.
  • You know, there's a reason you have a knocker or doorbell - it's so you can receive visitors. If you don't like to be visited, you have several options. 1. Say 'Not interested, thanks' and close the door. 2. Post a sign that says "Grumpy non-social homeowner - do not knock/ring bell" or simply 'No visitors, please'. 3. Put a very large and mean dog on your porch. 4. Install a moat - I hear they're best with a fuel, such as oil, which you can light on fire when you're feeling anti-social.
  • KG
no a knocker/doorbell is there to let me know that my closest friends and family are at the door, and to let them in!

there's a reason we have TV and web advertisements - to let the general public know "hey I want my product/service/religion to be considered by you!" If you dont like commercials consider 1. Spamming and sending unsolicited emails (as opposed to unsolicited people knocking at your door) 2. Posting a sign/billboard that says "Obnoxious recruiter" or 3. Put a sign around a very large and mean dog
  • wikiBuddha
Replace "religion" with "monotheism" and the article rings much more true. I don't enjoy having my Buddhist world-view (technically agnostic or polytheistic) so intimately associated with monotheists, thank you!
  • CR
Remember that we're in the 21st century and blood transfusions started back in the World War era. Science and medicine are much more advanced these days. Blood transfusions are highly unnecessary in this day and age. Most of the time they're pushed due the revenue that places like the Red Cross incur.

I think your article is missing a lot of facts and possible extenuating circumstances. I personally know someone who had a heart transplant without a blood transfusion and the only reason he died was because his body rejected the transplant. It had nothing to do with him not taking a blood transfusion.

I believe JW's reject transfusions foremost because of the Bible, but also because they are HIGHLY dangerous. There are countless SAFE alternatives to blood transfusions out there. You don't know about them because no one makes any money on them.
  • Jack
if they were dangerous, why do hospitals still use them? Right, because it's all a conspiracy by the healthcare industry.
  • tedGa
I just found out recently that on the average major surgery they make about $10k .
Yes , blood is a moneymaker.

If you don;t think the healthcare and pharmacutical industry is motivated by money then you really need to wake up.
I had cancer and they told me i was crazy to try natural or alternative treatments (safer and cheaper)
3 years later here I am cancer free and others at the same time that were at oncologist are mostly dead.

Doctors say (we'' it MUST have been something we did)
  • J. R.
YOU CAN TELL THAT WHO IS IGNORANT AND WHO IS NOT. IF SOMETHING IS GOOD FOR YOU BECAUSE GOD SAYS IT IS THEN SHOULD YOU NOT INVESTIGATE THOROUGHLY FIRST BEFORE SAYING THAT JW ARE WRONG JUST BECAUSE YOU WHERE BROUGHT UP TO DISLIKE THEM FOR ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH IN MATTERS?
  • GK
Haha, I bet if we went back in time someone would be saying "If bleeding wounds is so dangerous, why is everyone doing it?"
  • Jack Lover
Hey Jack, in an effort sound witty, you unknowingly stumbled upon the real facts. Many health organizations world-wide are starting to put blood transfusion in the same league as 18th century blood-letting.
  • So why not save a few pints of your own blood and get on with it?
Or better yet, try mms found here at http://pestilences.com
  • globaljp
Prince did not grow up a JW. He studied with them a few years ago and found what he believes is the answer. There are many alternatives to blood transfusions that are much safer and healthier than plasma. If and when Prince truly needs surgery, he will have many alternatives with surgery that dont require blood.
Check your info about bloodless surgery and supreme court rulings for your freedom of speech. Next time a JW knocks at your door you may want to thank them. They have won more supreme court rulings in the US than any other group.
Watch the documentary "Knocking". It may enlighten you on the subject. Take care
  • KG
Hi sir! Thanks for knocking on my door! You've won alot of supreme court rulings and i just wanted to thank you for letting me stand in your presence.

    Wait
    Wait

Wait, why were you in court again?
  • GK
    ...Fighting for freedom of speech?...
wait wait wait, didya not read the comment that you replied to?
  • Don
The answer is simple. The gives a sufficient amount of his own blood prior to the surgery, and gets it back during the surgery. This has been the workaround for scheduled surgeries for years.
  • ExJW
What's funny is that, just like all of the JW's "beliefs", they change according to what will keep people in the religion or coming into it. Their current stance on the blood issue is that it is up to each JW to decide for themselves. They also don't mind taking out their own blood if it goes back in. They allow their blood to be taken out of their bodies, let the plasma separate out and have the remaining blood put back in.

When I was a JW they preached that under no circumstances could anyone accept blood. Not dying children, not pregnant women...NO ONE. Then they accepted plasma (which is directly FROM blood). Now they are leaving the decision up to each individual. Unfortunately this practice of making their beliefs convenient to the times is what they have been practicing since they started 100 years ago.

It's sad how many people have died because of their JW "faith".
  • Lisa
On the issue of blood it has always been up to the individual to decide if he/she will have one. That doesn't mean Jehovah's Witnesses are changing their beliefs. We are guided by bible truths but we still have free will. Jehovah gives us guidance, if we don't accept that guidance we are choosing to accept the consequences that follow.

"Unfortunately this practice of making their beliefs convenient to the times..."
Now if you want a true history about which religions change their beliefs convenient to the times,
That's what "Christianity" has been doing since Emperor Constantine. Remember he was the first "Christian Emperor" that made it "okay" to celebrate pagan holidays as long as they became more "Christian" like.
  • Queen Bee
You are a COMPLETE IDIOT! and actually don't deserve a reply, I don't know why I'm still typing.
  • PriestSevina
How come is he an idiot? Because he said obvious things about a religion that has stupid rules which God has never talked about or never will? Religion is about spirituality and your blood is not part of that. The blood is part of your body. The spirit is what it counts in front of God: some people just forget that their human bodies remain here on Earth, 6 feet under. I recommend some bible reading and before even doing that, wake up your spirit. You might just understand more than you do now.
