Wait, Hanson Covers Radiohead & It’s Good? How About Amazing!

The Hanson brothers famous for their “Mmm Bop” song years ago have developed a taste for good music apparently and somehow managed to NOT turn this great song into a pop jingle.

I’m definitely not trying to bash on these guys because they are extremely talented but musically we wouldn’t normally have our tastes align. I really expected to hear some ultra pop, teen approved cover one of the best bands ever (in my book anyway). I know these guys are now adults and have matured in sound since the Mmm Bop days and I’m sure it sucks to forever pigeonholed but this may help to change that.

welcome to 2005! I am happy this cover is getting the appreciation it deserves. When it first came out, the hipsters were falling all over themselves screaming about how much it sucked -- usually without having heard it. I love Radiohead and I have loved Hanson for just as long. They are ridiculously underrated songwriters and musicians. You owe it to yourself to check out any of their albums from the last 10 years.

To be fair, Hanson hasn't suddenly, "have developed a taste for good music." They've been crediting musicians like Chuck Berry, Aerosmith and the Beach Boys for years in terms of their influences. They've also written songs with Carole King and have done collaborations with Blues Traveler's John Popper (who complimented their musicianship). Not to mention the fact that they've helped give a lot of really talented musicians their big breaks, such as Brandi Carlile, who opened for them in a show I saw a few years back in LA . Given their versatile history it isn't surprising that they've done such a bad ass Radiohead cover. Regardless of your feelings toward the power pop one generally expects from Hanson, it can't be denied that they're a talented group of fellas.

Um, this is actually pretty amazing.

    LOVE this.
  • The vocal style is a bit too "polished" and the guitar sound could get further out of the box, but this is fucking surprising in its quality.
  • Jon
What box are you talking about?

That vocal harmony is amazing. All the inflections sound natural and valid. Polished? It's a live show. Therefore it makes the vocal delivery even more amazing.
  • I should've clarified that both points are actually personal preferences on the Radiohead original. The guitar sound is too stock, is the same guitar sound you would find in any given current top 40 rocker. Jonny Greenwood uses really textured guitar sounds, and Thom Yorke's deadpan delivery provides much of Radiohead's distinctive sound, while Hanson's (technically impressive) vocals are too "High School Musical." That being said, it wouldn't make sense for them to try and sound like Radiohead and they've done a commendable work of making the song their own. It's just that, for my taste, a little part of it gets lost in translation.

I agree that Hanson benefits much more as far as gaining street cred by trying to stay as close to the original as possible. While some of the vocals are kinda soulful (or high school musical if you want to look at it that way) my first thought when hearing him stray was Jeff Buckley. I think if Buckley covered the song it would be full on soul which was his style. Not trying to compare Hanson to Buckley but that's what popped in my head and it made the added soul vocals easier to swallow. I don't know if any of you guys ever listen to Lovedrug but the vocals sound exactly like the singer for that band. Good stuff.
