Proof That All Artist Are Copy Cats? Hmm, That Does Sound Familiar!

All Bands/Singers copy each other and the proof is in the pudding…..or chord progression. Ok maybe “all” is a bit of an over statement but it happens quite a bit and it’s usually not intentional. I hope not anyway.
.

Ever hear a tune and go …….I know this song but it’s not the song I’m thinking about? You pull up Google and start searching the web because it is driving you nuts because that song sounds so familiar. Well If you haven’t then consider yourself lucky.

The Joe Satriani and Coldplay dispute made lots of headlines because Satch said Coldplay was plagiarizing his music. I think these videos show that all artist copy each other and thats OK! Its a melody/chord progression! Get over it.

Axis of Awesome – Four Chords, 36 Songs

That’s right, you weren’t crazy after all. While this video demonstrates a chord progression being used over and over, you can see that the melody lines over top are a bit different but still similar. If you’re writing pop music then everyone is using the same scales and occasionally even the melody line will be the same. Like for instance the Satriani lawsuit.

Ok still not convinced. The lawsuit story was a hot article here on Rev with a lot of discussion. One reader pointed out that there is another song that sounds very similar to Coldplay & Satriani and pre-dates both of them. The video below shows it in action.

Coldplay / Satriani / Verdes – Mashup

Using my Ricky Ricardo accent, ehh Satch you got some splaining to do!
