Watch Coachella Live Webcast This Weekend On Facebook

The Official Live Webcast for Coachella 2010 starts today, and will be streaming on Facebook this weekend. Wrigley’s Gum is sponsoring the stream this year and has a customizable app where you can pick from three different camera angles to view a performing band. You can also create a “playlist stream” of the bands you want to see and then watch with your friends on Facebook.

The list of bands featured on the Webcast ranges from DEVO, Passion Pit, De La Soul, and many more.

Coachella Artist Spotlight: Sunny Day Real Estate

No hiding the fact we love Sunny Day here at Revivl and for those attending Coachella this will be the show to see. The album to pick up if you’ve never heard them is Diary. Deftones Debut “Diamond Eyes” Video Online

Deftones have debuted their new Roboshobo (Metallica, Mastodon) directed music video for their track “Diamond Eyes” online, you can view it below. I think the Deftones have always made terrible videos that never really captured the feel of the band or song. This one…..I really like. Be sure to pick this album up when it comes out. It’s without a doubt their best release since White Pony.

Pop Music Sucks…But This Mash-Up Is Awesome!

Pop music sucks… plain and simple. ”Pop music” in it’s current 2009 undertaking seems to continue the trend that garbage will sell if you put enough Payola and Marketing behind it. They shovel it and the masses eat it up. The one decent thing to come out of all this crap is a very creative and seamless Mash-up called “United State of Pop: 2009 (Blame It on the Pop)“. A Mash-up of the Top 25 Hits of 2009 according to Billboard and it’s starting to make quite the buzz across the net. Enjoy.

Video of RATM Performing Uncensored on BBC Has Surfaced Online

Just to get you caught up, a grassroots campaign started on Facebook and organized itself to have users buy the track “Killing In The Name Of” the same week of the recent X-Factor winner. X-factor is the American Idol for the UK and has Simon Cowell on the show as well. So the goal is to have the RATM track to take the number one spot on the charts away from this years X-Factor winner Joe McElderry. The group is trying to make the statement that they are sick of manufactured pop music that is force fed through main stream media. The network says this is the best out there and spend millions making it appear that way when in fact the artist has very little to do with any of it. That’s what I got out of it anyway and the ending of the RATM song repeating the lyrics “Fuck You I Won’t Do What You Tell Me” over and over makes for a great statement.

Well the grassroots effort has turned into a full on media blitz and at last check RATM was actually ahead of the X-Factor star. Not bad for a song that is 17 years old (wow I feel old now). The group was asked to perform on BBC if they agreed to censor the lyrics. They agreed and performed the track but had a change of heart apparently when it came time to actually censor it. Who would have guessed. Censoring that would go against everything the group stands for and the actual cause they are supporting.

Well the radio interview was all over the place yesterday and now video of the performance is now online. I have to say I fully support the movement and RATM’s unwillingness to censor it. I love the fact that Zach gives the finger to the camera and is really animated. Oh and this is the uncensored performance that started all the talk but the video itself has been censored.

The Man In Black Praises A Man Named Beck

This short video is from 1997 and shows a very coherent Cash giving Beck some nice love. If you remember any of the interviews he did after the release of his last covers record, he seemed kind of out of it.

I always felt that Rubin probably just put him up to covering NIN because he thought it would sell more records not because he may have been a fan. That’s just what went through my head but after seeing this interview my initial thoughts may have been wrong. I’m sure this is covered all of over the web with all of my queries answered years ago but it apparently wasn’t high on my list of things to do.

Whatever the case, I found this to be a very interesting clip and a great watch!

Stream The Austin City Limits Festival On Hulu Right Now

Cnet is reporting that starting Friday 10.2.09 at 10:30 a.m. PDT, Hulu will be live-streaming the Austin City Limits music festival. Hulu will be using its Watch Now application on Facebook, which has a live events box integrated so that users can discuss the concert as they watch. Here’s a look at the schedule.

Sunny Day Real Estate Back and Bigger Than Ever!

I have to admit that I’m quite shocked at the attention Sunny Day has been getting. While I know they deserve every bit of it, the last record “The Rising Tide” was not well received by long time fans and the excitement had seemed to die off for a lot of people. I know I’m in the minority here but I thought “The Rising Tide” was a masterpiece and without a doubt their best release. While it was obvious the shows would sell out, I did not expect to see them on late night tv or NPR for that matter.

The closest show to me was Atlanta and sold out fairly quick so having these high quality clips are making up for it a little. Youtube is cool but I need a little higher production values then what you usually get their.

Just a day earlier, Sunny Day performed their classic “Seven” on the Jimmy Fallen show which was quite a surprise.

With the recent re-releases of “Diary” and “LP2″ the set is almost completely from those two records. Before the band left for tour they also wrote a new song which they are performing live. Hopefully this a sign of some good things to come.

MUSE Refusing To Lip Sync On Talk Show (Video)

Muse preformed their new single “Uprising” on TV but were told they had to play to a track (Lip Sync the performance), but….the band members had other ideas in store. Lead singer and guitarist “Matthew Bellamy” decided to fake the drums while the real drummer “Dominic Howard” took on vocal duties. Christopher Wolstenholme (Bass) had the role of Guitar and Keyboards with all members playing the wrong instruments. Even funnier is the fact that the talk show host had no idea she had been pawned even during the post interview.

Kudos to Muse for taking a stupid situation and having fun with it. BIG WIN in our books AND… this isn’t the first time they have pulled a similar stunt.

Top 10: The Best Spike Jonze Directed Music Videos

If you haven’t heard the buzz for Spike Jonze’s film adaptation of “Where The Wild Things Are” then you must be living in some remote cave in Antarctica. It has to be the most buzzed movie for the fall season and team Revivl is stoked to say the least! With the release date (Oct. 16th 2009) still a month away, we thought we would look back and pick out some of our favorite music videos directed by Mr. Jonze and rank them by the ones that had the biggest impact on us as musicians. Seeing as how most of the videos below were released by one of the Big 5 music labels, the higher quality versions have “embed disabled”. Oh RIAA, why do you make it so difficult. Regardless you will get the point. Enjoy and enlighten us if we missed one of your favorites!

10. “Fully Flared” for Lakai (2007)

I realize this isn’t a music video but it deserves to be on this list. The opening sequence for the skate video “Fully Flared” was directed by Spike and features some jaw dropping video work. The slow motion skating with epic explosions equal big WIN! The music ties everything together which happens to be one of my favorite bands M83 with the song “Lower your eyelids to die with the sun” off of the album “Before the Dawn Heals Us“.

9. Sonic Youth – 100% (1992)

My first introduction to Sonic Youth and surprise surprise, it also features skateboarding. This was Spikes second video he directed and has a very raw garage feel to it which seems fitting being a Sonic youth song. Did you see the Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl, Mallrats) cameo?

8. Beastie Boys – Sure Shot (1994)

Great song and great video! The idea for the video is very straight forward. Fish eyed lens pointed at the Beastie Boys and film it. Sometimes when the music is just that good, simple is all you need to do.

7. Fatboy Slim – Praise you (1998)

This video seems to foreshadow what the internet/Youtube would become. Guerrilla style film making done in a way never before seen on MTV. I know I had a “WTF” moment the first time I saw this.

6. Tenacious D – Wonderboy (2000)

A bit of Lord of the Rings with a spoonful of Meatloaf best describes this epic video for the always funny Tenacious D. Spike went under the name “Marcus Von Beuler” for director which seems fitting.

5. Wax – California (1995)

The video made famous thanks to Beavis and Butthead. What can I say other then brilliant idea. One shot of a guy running in slow motion on fire. The “Less is More” approach here works perfectly and after nearly 15 years, I still think about this video.

4. Pavement – Shadylane (1997)

Spike Jonze has had one amazing career just by the sheer fact of the bands he has gotten to work with. Cult indie fav Pavement is one that just makes you go Damn It! You are one lucky dude!

3. Bjork – It’s Oh So Quiet (1995)

My love for Bjork begins with this video. Stunning, beautiful and elegant! Who would have thought this song and video could break into the mainstream. I guess when you have a combo of Bjork and Jonze…….You can’t miss.

2. Beastie Boys – Sabotage (1994)

This video took a mid 80’s all white hip-hop band that had faded from MTV, to becoming one of the biggest bands in the world for a second time. A very rare thing to happen. Watch the video and its quite obvious why this was a breakout hit.

1. Weezer – Buddy Holly (1994)

1994 was the breakout year for Spike and this video made him one of the top music video directors in the world. I remember watching this for the first time and being blown away. I had never seen anything like this before. How did he blend Happy Days and Weezer together? The song and video are perfect which is why this gets the numero uno spot on the list.

Why It Took 15 Years To Love The Flaming Lips

My first experience with The Flaming Lips (which is probably the same for many others) was the single “She Don’t Use Jelly” off the album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart” (1993). This was the bands first (and really only) hit single and it was all over MTV. I absolutely hated it. I think Wayne’s red hair bugged me more than the music. This was a long time ago but I’m fairly positive I thought it was his real hair color and it really irked me.

Once the buzz of that single died down, I can’t say that I gave them another thought. Unless you kept up with the college rock scene, they might as well have broken up and fallen off the face of the earth. There were so many crap alternative bands that would come and go so fast back then, I simply lumped them in with all of that garbage. Keep in mind I was a huge metal head so all of it was garbage to me, but in my defense I was only 14 or 15 at the time. Being closed minded at that age is semi acceptable, right?

Fast forward 10 years and I start hearing the name The Flaming Lips again. I’m thinking wait, the Carrot Top band is back together. I don’t give it much thought but the name keeps popping up more and more. For a band that had one hit years ago, the amount of buzz was enough for me to find out what was going on. The band had released “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” and they were suddenly in my line of view again. Keep in mind during the ten years that have passed, I had went from worshiping bands like Carcass, Pantera, and Death to massive fans of Radiohead, Failure, Kent etc.

So I check it out and I like it. I don’t buy the record but I like what I see (no more red hair, just kidding…not really) and realize I had these guys pinned all wrong. When they are in my view, I pay attention. When they are talked about, they are given two thumbs up. I really liked the experimental stuff I was hearing and Wayne’s awesome white suit more than made up for his red hair that possibly traumatized me as a kid. However, for whatever reason, they became a band that you know you should pay more attention to, but simply do not. When they are in your line of sight you watch and listen with great love, but when they fall back out, it’s like they don’t exist again.

Fast forward six more years and I watch “The Flaming Lips: The Fearless Freaks” documentary which came out in 2005. My first reaction after watching is Damn It! Why the hell did it take me 15 years to figure out that I should have paid more attention. The film blew me away and have since gone back and purchased the earlier releases and caught up on what I had ignored for whatever reason, for so many years.

While all of our mystery bands will be different and some will be realized and a lot will not, I ask all of you only slightly familiar with The Flaming Lips to watch the documentary below in hopes that a familiarity with an artist can be turned into music that is now filed under great.
