Want To Know How To Quit Smoking? “Facebook” Of Course.

Legendary Rock Icon “John Mellencamp” is just as much known for his hit “Jack and Diane“, as he is for being a heavy life long smoker. His 14 year old son “Speck” is trying to change all of that.

Mellencamp made a deal with his youngest son (Speck) that he would agree to quit smoking if his Facebook group ”1,000,000 to join, my dad John Mellencamp will quit smoking.” actually hit the 1 million mark. His goal of reaching that by the end of 2009 came up short, but currently he still has an impressive 280,000 people signed up and growing.

Mellencamp’s wife, model Elaine Irwin Mellencamp, tells Examiner.com, “I don’t think any kid likes to see a parent smoking and it’s always inspiring when people build a true grassroots movement. When a 14-year-old kid does it, it’s all the more charming. It’s become a story of applying yourself and making a difference, and I’m really proud of him for having that experience.”

Mellencamp made a post on his website recently about his sons current efforts to get him to quit smoking.

“Speck is doing this to try to persuade me to stop smoking, and I look at it as a huge act of love on his behalf. He’s a big dreamer, and I hope that someday he’ll use his dream to benefit his world in some fashion.”

Musicians Give Big To Help A Comrad In Need

It’s been 1 year now since Deftones bassist Chi Cheng went into a Coma following a car accident on Nov 4th 2008. As you can imagine, the medical bills for the Cheng family are astronomical. Oneloveforchi.com was created in March 2009 to help raise funds for Cheng and his medical expenses, where fans can donate to help towards a initial target of $20,000 (later raised to $50,000 and $100,000). It is also a place where fans can read personal blogs and comments from the Cheng family, and record a message that will be played to Cheng to further speed his recovery. Chi is awake and now at home beginning physical therapy but still has a long road ahead learning to talk and gain control over his muscles.

To help the Cheng family meet the donations needed, a variety of famous musicians and companies have teamed up to create several types of auctions to help raise money for Cheng on the site CharityBuzz.com.

Red Bull Soundclash Announces Free Raleigh, NC “Battle Of The Bands” Show

“It’s Durham versus Raleigh, R&B versus indie-pop, as The Foreign Exchange and The Love Language prepare to give the Triangle a battle of the bands like you’ve never seen.

Red Bull Soundclash is a unique clash of sounds, style, and creativity, where two bands with totally different music backgrounds collaborate to create an innovative live music performance. Both groups will bring their own respective styles, a clash of The Foreign Exchange’s R&B melodies and The Love Language’s lo-fi indie-rock, as they perform a variety of different songs, some rehearsed and some improvised, to showcase their musical versatility. DJ Lord of Public Enemy will be spinning on the one’s and two’s while Kyle Santillian will serve as the event’s host. YOU, the audience, also participates in the back-and-forth interaction between the bands by judging each round with your applause!

Red Bull Soundclash is a FREE 18+ event taking place on November 12 on the streets of Raleigh at the intersection of North Street and Glenwood Avenue (next to The Hibernian Pub). Gates open at 7:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m.”

Update: This was some sort of hoax. Chuck is very alive.

It’s being reported today that Chuck Biscuits has died after losing his battle with throat cancer earlier in the week.

“Legendary hard rock drummer Chuck Biscuits, whose lengthy résumé included stints in such flagship underground acts as Black Flag and Social Distortion, died Saturday after a prolonged battle with throat cancer. He was 44.

“In response to the inquires, thank you for all the support,” an anonymous family member wrote in an e-mail sent this morning. “Chuck did not survive his battle with throat cancer. He passed surrounded by his family on 10/24/09.”

Chuck Biscuits was probably best known to the general populous for his work with Danzig. Beginning in 1988, Chuck played on that group’s first four albums, which are often hailed as Danzig’s best (thanks in no small part to Chuck’s powerful drumming style). The percussionist also appeared on 1993’s Thrall: Demonsweatlive EP; that release yielded an unexpected chart-burning hit for Danzig in “Mother,” a song the band originally included on their self-titled debut.

Yet Chuck Biscuits was not completely bound by the shackles of heavy metal/hard rock – the drummer kindly lent his talents to various tracks on Run-D.M.C.’s fourth album, 1988’s Tougher Than Leather. Leather boasted a handful of hits for the famed Hollis Crew, including “Mary, Mary” and “Beats To The Rhyme.”

Born Charles Montgomery on April 17, 1965, in British Columbia, Chuck Biscuits cut his teeth with Canadian hardcore outfit D.O.A. before relocating to California in 1982 and joining Black Flag. Biscuits left that group after five months of touring and began bouncing around from band to band, clocking time with classic punk acts such as the Circle Jerks, Fear, and the Weirdos. It wasn’t long before Chuck made a name for himself in the rock underground with his utterly ferocious yet completely accurate attack; he was rumored to be at the top of Nirvana’s drummer “wish list” in the days prior to Dave Grohl.

The last major group Chuck played with was Social Distortion, beginning in 1996. He appeared on only one of their releases, 1998’s Live At The Roxy, before promptly leaving the band a year later. It is unknown whether the drummer’s throat cancer played a part in that departure.

Outside of music, Chuck Biscuits was a known lover of art who spent some time in the late 1980s sculpting and attending college art classes.

“Chuck was one of the best of the original wave of punk drummers,” Descendents drummer Bill Stevenson said in brief e-mail exchange with the author last year. “His style was easily recognizable, and he seemed to have just a ton of extra energy when playing drums. He is one of those people who did not have to practice a lot to play really well.”

“It came very natural to him,” Stevenson continued. “He was hugely influential without really being as ‘famous’ as drummers who were actually much less influential musically.”

It is unknown exactly who Chuck is survived by, but they will surely miss him, as will an entire generation of rock n’ roll fans.

This is Revivl’s first off topic post and is not something we will do very often but this really blew my mind and I wanted to share. In the clip below Jerry Fallwell introduces spiritual mathematics.

Ok hopefully you just watched that clip and was disgusted as I was. Yes I know Falwell was always making some outrageous statements but living in our current recession, it really makes me wonder how many other churches around the country (or world) may be using a similar tactic to keep its revenue stream at the same levels before the economic crisis began.
