We watch this every year and it’s always a great treat if you were unable to get to the fest yourself. Not every band will be streamed and some of the bigger bands usually decline the offer (Radiohead and no At The Drive-In!). The recently reunited Refused and Explosions In The Sky will be streaming though and that is more than enough to make me happy. Album Of The Week 4-12-2012

Matt Pike is pretty much a legend in the metal world and he’s finally put together the album that made my jaw drop. It’s a must have! I’ll let Pitchfork do what they do best with the detailed album review. Just know that we love this record and you should give it a listen ASAP!

High on Fire’s sixth album, De Vermis Mysteriis, or “The Mysteries of the Worm”, has a complicated conceptual arc attached to it. The title references a fictional magic book created by the writer Robert Bloch and later employed by H.P. Lovecraft in a number of his stories. Then there are the songs themselves. In the words of HoF frontman/guitarist/stoner-philosopher Matt Pike, the album’s content is framed by a couple of theoretical questions: “What if Jesus had a twin who died at birth to give Jesus his life? And then what if the twin became a time traveler right then?” Listening to this blistering 52-minute set, though, you’re better off forgetting all of that and just enjoying the group’s raw, rollicking return to form.

Not that they’ve ever really fallen off. Rick Rubin pal Greg Fidelman, who worked on Slayer’s World Painted Blood and Metallica’s infamous Death Magnetic, gave an unwelcome glossy sheen to 2010′s Snakes for the Divine: The songs were there, but his approach sucked the air out of them. You come to Pike and co. for their sweaty, thrashing, chipped-tooth sludge; on that record, when they tore into a song that rattled the speakers in a live setting, it came off a bit lifeless. De Vermis is also quite different from 2007′s excellent Jack Endino-produced Death Is This Communion: Instead of folding in raga-style/acoustic-experimental twists, you get straightforward– albeit mighty, masterfully executed– stoner metal. Imagine 2002′s Surrounded by Thieves played by a band with another decade’s worth of experience under their belts and whisky in their guts.

De Vermis was produced by Converge‘s Kurt Ballou; the results are dirtier, looser, scrappier, warmer, more soulful, more immediately invigorating than on Snakes. He also gets Des Kensel’s drums right. On De Vermis, High on Fire sound like a band that’s been playing and traveling in a van together for more than a decade not rock stars relegated to different sections of a studio, and there’s space here for improvisation and chance. (Bassist Jeff Matz, who became a full-time player on Death is the Communion, gets an honorary old-timer medal because he locks in with drummer Kensel like a lifer.)

That’s the major difference here from what we got a couple of years ago: The band seems to be taking their time and letting things open up and go wherever they may want to go. The first track, “Serums of Liao”, a hulking, six-minute rager, sets the tone, and unlike the past couple of records, they don’t slow things down much for the remaining nine tracks: It’s fitting the next track is a Motörhead headlock called “Bloody Knuckles”. This really is visceral, ecstatically grimy heavy metal, and trying to parse each reference to Lovecraft, Bloch, “Quantum Leap”, or “ancient Chinese alchemists” detracts from the face that something like the shredding “Fertile Green” feels like a HoF classic (and, really, is probably, more or less, just about getting high).

Things don’t let up. There’s the sludgy, fuzzed-out feedback of the almost seven-minute “Madness of an Architect”, a standout that hints at slow-burn Sunn O))) until Pike breaks the trance at the two-minute mark, the group finding a groove that’s more bayou than Oakland. It bleeds into “Samsara”, a late-night, solo-happy instrumental that feels like the finale of a leaving-it-all-on-the-stage set, not anything interstitial: It offers a moment to catch your breath before the battering ram of “Spiritual Rites”, but doesn’t slow down the action or get too cute. Basically, it’s something they could pull off live without reaching into a bag of alternate tunings or miscellaneous tricks.

You get more of that after-hours feel on the album’s best track, “King of Days”, a dark, seven-minute dose of progressive psychedelia that will have you mentioning Sabbath and, amid it’s mountainous peaks and solos, Pike’s earlier band, doom legends Sleep. Interestingly, High on Fire are making some of the best music of their career just as Sleep’s in the midst of a reunion (which began in 2009) and getting set to reissue their 2003 ritualistic, epic-as-fuck, one-song stoner classic, Dopesmoker.

Who knows what all of this means for the profile of either act. High on Fire are still probably too aggro for your casual listeners, and Sleep are too expansive with their wild-green incantations. But Pike is a legend in underground metal circles, and it’s great hearing him strut on De Vermis (for my money, he’s the one who should be the one representing “rock” at the Grammys). His solos are getting more stop-in-your-tracks audacious. His songwriting’s sharper. The trio, using age and experience to a positive end, feels comfortable, but far from complacent. They’ve found a way to be ambitious while also elemental, a difficult trick that Sleep pulled off on Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker, and one that High on Fire have nailed here.

Bummer: Sigur Rós On Indefinite Hiatus

Wow, this is not the kind of news I wanted to wake up and post. One of our favorite bands Sigur Rós is now on indefinite hiatus. Usually when you see indefinite hiatus you can translate that into broke up but with a little wiggle room just in case something changes. Another one of our favorite bands, At The Drive-In, is about 10 years in into theirs right now. What makes this so weird is that the band had posted that the new record was almost done.

sigur rós have been at work in their sundlaugin studio in álafoss the past few weeks recording a full length album, which is now nearing completion. orri told morgunblaðið newspaper today that the recordings have been going very well and that the album is taking form as a slower and more ambient record than með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust and takk

According to Paste, Frontman Jónsi Birgisson recently told Spinner, “We haven’t got another [Sigur Rós] album ready. It was just a rumor. We started to record something, but then we chucked it all away. So I think we are going to have to start it all again.”

So now that the band has some free time, the question now is how to fill it. Easy, make some babies, duh! For vocalist Jonsi, his baby is a new solo project slated to come out this spring. Check out the track below from his upcoming solo album.

Tool frontman “Maynard James Keenan” is more then just a singer for one of the biggest rock bands in the world. He is also a wine maker. Keenan owns Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars which is located in an area known as Kansas Settlement in Sulfur Springs Valley, Arizona. Keenan also stars in Blood Into Wine: The Arizona Stronghold, a documentary about Keenan’s embarkation into winemaking in the desert conditions of Arizona’s Verde Valley, and the success they’ve seen in the decade since its inception.

Now the first trailer released many months ago looked like a typical documentary about the struggles and achievements of making wine in Arizona. The second trailer released a few days ago, has me a little confused and excited. It features Bob Odenkirk, Patton Oswalt, Milla Jovovich and it’s quite funny in a Mockumentary kind of way.

EMI Sues Vimeo For Encouraging Users To Submit “Lip Dubbing” Videos

The record label EMI has sued video streaming site Vimeo for copyright infringement for encouraging it’s users to upload clips of them lip-syncing over a prerecorded song. According to Media Post,the complaint alleges that Vimeo not only displays “lip dubs,” but also advises users to create the clips by combining videos of themselves with high-quality copies of songs. “This ensures that the music that accompanies the ‘lip dub’ video, which virtually always is copied directly from a commercial recording, is high-quality, of substantial volume, and is the focal point of the audiovisual work,” the lawsuit alleges.

These big record labels really know how to crash a party. Rolling Stone put it into perspective by saying it’s probably just a coincidence that EMI’s lawsuit against Vimeo comes just a few weeks after the major label agreed to terms to license its music and videos to Vevo, YouTube’s new video streaming site made in collaboration with the record industry.

The Man In Black Praises A Man Named Beck

This short video is from 1997 and shows a very coherent Cash giving Beck some nice love. If you remember any of the interviews he did after the release of his last covers record, he seemed kind of out of it.

I always felt that Rubin probably just put him up to covering NIN because he thought it would sell more records not because he may have been a fan. That’s just what went through my head but after seeing this interview my initial thoughts may have been wrong. I’m sure this is covered all of over the web with all of my queries answered years ago but it apparently wasn’t high on my list of things to do.

Whatever the case, I found this to be a very interesting clip and a great watch!

Wait, Thom Yorke Has A New Band With Flea?

A few days ago Thom Yorke announced he had a new band put together on the Radiohead blog Dead Air Space. I have to admit, I didn’t pay much attention to it. He already did a solo record a few years ago “The Eraser” and the bit I heard online was that he would be doing some tracks from this. Well I really should have paid more attention.

hi, in the past couple of weeks i’ve been getting a band together for fun to play the eraser stuff live and the new songs etc.. to see if it could work!

Flea is in the band? Crazy but this is just the backing band for Thom and they are just doing Eraser material right? Well that’s what I thought until you read this line:

at the beginning of october the 4th and 5th we are going to do a couple of shows at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. we don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well …we haven’t got that much material yet! but come and check it out if you are in the area. we’ve also got locals Lucky Dragons playing.all the best

Wait, no name and do not have a lot of material yet? This is blowing my mind. Earlier today Thom made another post on the blog announcing a show in LA tonight.
